How Fat Transfer Can Rejuvenate Your Face

The older we get, the more the fat distribution in our body changes.

While some areas gain fat, other areas (like the face) tend to lose fat. This loss of volume can result in sagging skin and a tired, worn-out appearance.

Other times, lack of volume in the face can cause wrinkles and fine lines to occur as well as make our cheeks look sunken.

Fat transfer, or fat grafting to the face, can enhance volume to your skin for a fuller and brighter appearance.

Fat transfer can fill in the volume loss from the aging process. Restoring your cheeks, nasolabial folds, and lips can shed years off your appearance.

What Is Fat Transfer?

There are three steps to fat transfer:

1. Extraction

Fat is removed from troublesome areas of your body (stomach, flanks, buttocks, abdomen, and thighs) through liposuction.

Liposuction is typically performed with low-pressure liposuction using 3-4 mm cannulas. During this procedure, laser-assisted liposuction cannot be performed because it will damage the regenerative cells in the fat.

Since you are simultaneously removing and adding fat to designated areas, this procedure can improve two areas at once.

Reshaping your stomach or buttocks while plumping your face can create the results of two procedures for only half the investment.

2. Processing

The fatty tissue is then purified in a centrifuge under precise conditions. The purified fat is rich in stem cells, which help rebuild the structure of the skin.

Stem cells are popular for their ability to regenerate themselves. Overloading your skin with these cells creates a stark jump in collagen and elastin production.

These two substances are responsible for the tightness and fullness of the skin, which means long after the volume has been added, your face will continue to tighten and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

3. Injection

Once the fat has been thoroughly cleaned, it is injected in tiny droplets into the face.

It is essential for the fat to be injected into different tissue depths. This ensures that the fat is next to a good supply of blood in the facial tissue.

Common areas of fat grafting include:

  • Bags under the eyes
  • Nasolabial fold lines around your mouth
  • Wrinkles
  • Creases
  • Hollow cheeks

If the fat is properly extracted, processed, and reinjected, you should have a long-lasting result that will last for many years.
