KYBELLA®

Moderate to severe fat below the chin that causes the appearance of a “double chin” can often affect the entire facial profile. Many people who have submental fat and have tried diet and exercise to target this stubborn area have had little success in getting rid of the fat entirely. If someone wants to get rid of excess chin fat for good, they may be interested in KYBELLA®. This non-surgical treatment contains deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that breaks down and absorbs dietary fat. After undergoing KYBELLA® treatment, many patients have been able to achieve better chin contours and an improvement in the appearance of the overall face and profile.

Candidates

A good candidate for KYBELLA® has excess fat below the chin and would like to get rid of it for good. It is not recommended to receive KYBELLA® if you have an infection in the treatment area. During your consultation, Dr. O’Neil will help you decide if KYBELLA® is right for you. At this time, your medical history and medical conditions will be discussed. You should also mention any medications you are taking, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

You should let your KYBELLA® provider know if you:

  • Are pregnant or plan on becoming pregnant
  • Have had or plan on having surgery on the face, neck, or chin
  • Have trouble swallowing
  • Have bleeding problems
  • Are breastfeeding

Procedure

KYBELLA® has been approved as safe to target submental fat. It works by breaking down and absorbing dietary fat. Once KYBELLA® is injected into the fat beneath the chin, it destroys the fat cells permanently.

When administering KYBELLA® treatment, multiple injections will be made all along the underside of the chin. KYBELLA® usually requires six treatment sessions for complete results. Most patients will notice a significant reduction of fat beneath the chin within two to four treatments. It is a simple office procedure similar to a dermal filler treatment like Juvederm or restylane, but Kybella removes fat rather than adding something like the fillers.

Recovery and Results

KYBELLA® requires little to no downtime. Patients can go back to work and regular activities immediately following KYBELLA® treatment.

Although KYBELLA® is a safe procedure, some patients may experience side effects, which can include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Redness
  • Hardness in the treatment area

More serious side effects of KYBELLA® can include trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that could cause facial muscle weakness, but these are rare.

Once all six treatments are complete, Facial fat will be gone for good and patients can enjoy their more flattering Facial contours and an improvement in their facial profile.

Kybella for Neck Contouring

Kybella (Deoxycholic acid) is a product produced by Kythera biopharmaceuticals and distributed through Allergan. It is used to reduce small pockets of fat such as submental (under the chin) fat.

The Kybella product is an injectable solution. The operator injects the Kybella into the fat with extremely small needles after preparing the skin with a topical anesthetic. Most patients observe only minimal discomfort.

Over the next few months the Kybella solution works to break down the fat cells and cause fat reabsorption reducing the pockets of fat, and improving contour. Results are very long lasting.

Most patients require 2-3 treatments for satisfactory results. Kybella is quite safe when used in small fatty areas. Other potential treatment sites are fatty cheeks/ jowls and upper chest/ armpit fat. Because of cost, only small abdominal pockets of fat are generally treated.

Kybella works best on patients with good skin elasticity. There is some skin firming with Kybella but Kybella does not replace facial/ neck surgery in the aging patient.

Cost varies, depending on the volume of Kybella required. The chin are is $600/750 to 1200/1500$ per treatment, depending on whether one or two vials are used.
